This is exactly right. If you are interested in reaching SU users, link to what interests you and share that. That may be your own work from time to time - I can safely say no one creates the content I do.
But trying to sell them stuff right away is really, really dumb. And pushing them to link back without offering something worthwhile - not just a quick laugh - is gonna be a problem. You reap what you sow, you'll get users that are passionate about shiny objects if you aim low. The challenge of SU is to find the community you need and want to be with here.
